Kai Tak Airport, located in Hong Kong, was the territory's international airport from 1925 until 1998. It was also one of the busiest airports in the world. The airport was notorious for its "checkerboard" landing approach, in which pilots had to navigate between high-rise buildings on their final approach. In 1998, Kai Tak Airport was replaced by the new Hong Kong International Airport and its checkerboard approach was no longer needed.
Today, the site of Kai Tak Airport is being redeveloped into a new mixed-use district called Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. The terminal is scheduled to open in 2013 and will include a cruise ship berth, retail space, hotels, and more.
